6 things to remember before visiting Gurudongmar Lake

The beauty of Gurudongmar Lake is not questionable. But situating at 17100+  feet height this place deserves some extra attention. So keep in mind the following things and you will enjoy more.

  1. Choose right time: June to August is not a good time to visit, as road conditions become dangerous
due to rain. Road remains closed at winter also due to heavy snow. So, avoid December and January if possible, or else you may have to come back unsuccessfully.
  1. You are not a foreigner: Foreigners are not allowed to visit Gurudongmar Lake. People says, this is because the place is very close to China Border. So, plan you trip accordingly in case you are a guest of India.
  1. You are physically fit: Make sure you are in good physical condition. Many people experience breathing problem here due to low percentage of Oxygen in the air. Consult your doctor beforehand if you are a patient of Asthma, or a child or very aged person is traveling with you.
  1. Do not run: Some people become overwhelmed by the beauty of Gurudongmar Lake. Refrain from any physical activity such as running, jumping, shouting or anything similar. Because doing these your lungs demand more Oxygen which is not available there. Keep some chewing gums, popcorn.
  1. Don’t smoke: Some people feels a cigarette gives relief from extreme cold. But, believe me this can lead you in trouble in this place.
  1. Don’t be overconfident: Even if you are young and physically fit, don’t think that you can overcome every situation. Don’t get down to the lake alone, because climbing up can be tough and there should be someone to see you if you are in any kind of trouble.
So, why waiting, if you are planning to visit North Sikkim, include Gurudongmar Lake. Also, don't forget to share your experience too in comments.
